'Capturing Cumbria in Pen and Wash ~ Churches, Cottages & more  ~  with Lyn Evans  

This is a lovely day with Lyn Evans,  who will combine this most popular medium along with some of our lovely Lakeland heritage buildings, of all sizes, whether nestled on a hillside in a wider landscape, or within a country estate, or our towns and villages. 

The day will start with a step by step where you will be working on the same piece with Lyn, using the camera and screen so you can follow from the comfort of your desks as she leads you through the drawing and painting of the piece. You can of course just watch at the front too if you wish.  Bring some of you own photographs or images to work on in the afternoon and Lyn will continue to guide you through your piece.  Suitable for all abilities.

The Vernacular' refers to any traditional, local style of building and design that comes from using the naturally available building materials, stones, slates etc within that locality. 

Lakeland vernacular' refers to the traditional, local style of building and design found in the Lake District, Cumbria. It encompasses the use of local materials, like Borrowdale slate and stone, and building techniques specific to the region, resulting in a harmonious blend with the landscape. This vernacular architecture also reflects the functional needs and traditions of the area, with buildings often designed to withstand the local climate and terrain,

Typically this course runs with around 10-12 students. Suitable for all abilities including beginners.

Please bring: Please bring whatever watercolour painting materials you have - good quality watercolour paper or pad (at least 300g with a rough finish, or cold pressed, preferable not Hot pressed as its too smooth), brushes, a soft pencil and a waterproof ink pen. Also some A4 photographs or any reference materials you might wish to bring for you afternoon pieces. This could be your favourite view of a building set in the wider landscape or something slightly closer up.  

 About the Artist  I have painted throughout most of my life, from my years at Sunderland Art College to the present day,  I’m inspired mostly by the more unusual colours of nature. The early morning or late evening light, particularly during the Autumn months, is a favourite. I paint in oil, pastel and watercolours, each one bringing a different quality to the work.  So often it is the subject that will dictate the medium used.  Pastel is unsurpassed for colour and texture while oils excel in quality and the ability to move or blend.

Watercolour, with its more delicate character, is ideal for the beautiful misty days that we have in plenty in Cumbria.I paint everything and anything but landscape is my first love.So the countryside in which I live and the quality of light enjoy are present in all my work. My influences are Chien Chung Wei, the Taiwanese watercolourist, Iain Stewart, the Scottish watercolourist  (both of whom I have painted with) and  Casey Klahn the American pastelist.  

Some years ago Lyn moved from her Edinburgh base, to the foot of Blencathra from where she is now able to enjoy her own spectacular views of one of Cumbria's favourite fells.
